The Institutes and InsuranceAUM.com Launch the
Chartered Insurance Investment Manager™ (CIIM™) Designation

Malvern, Pa. (February 11, 2026) — The Institutes, in collaboration with InsuranceAUM.com (IAUM), today announced the launch of the Chartered Insurance Investment Manager™ (CIIM™) designation, the first professional credential designed specifically for insurance asset management. CIIM was created to address the growing complexity of insurer investment portfolios and the need for specialized, insurance-focused investment expertise.

Insurance investment management is fundamentally different from traditional asset management, requiring professionals to balance return generation with liquidity, capital, accounting, and regulatory constraints unique to insurers. As insurance portfolios continue to grow in scale and sophistication, the demand for practitioners with applied, insurance-specific investment knowledge has never been greater. CIIM was developed to meet this need by delivering practical, skills-focused education tailored exclusively to the insurance investment ecosystem.

The CIIM program was developed through collaboration between The Institutes Knowledge Group and InsuranceAUM.com, drawing heavily on the expertise of IAUM subject matter experts (SMEs) from across the insurance investment community. These SMEs played a critical role in shaping the curriculum, case studies, and real-world applications that anchor the program, ensuring the designation reflects the realities insurers face today.

“CIIM is the culmination of nearly five years of work and collaboration with some of the most knowledgeable professionals in insurance asset management,” said Stewart Foley, CFA, Founder and Senior Advisor of InsuranceAUM.com. “The insurance industry needed a designation that truly reflects how insurers invest, manage risk, and operate under regulatory and capital constraints. By leveraging IAUM’s extensive network of subject matter experts and The Institutes’ unmatched educational leadership, CIIM sets a new standard for insurance investment expertise.”

Backed by The Institutes’ more than 115 years of experience as a not-for-profit, CIIM underscores a continued commitment to educating, elevating, and connecting professionals in risk management and insurance. The Institutes designation equips insurance investment professionals with actionable knowledge across insurer financial dynamics, asset fundamentals, asset-liability management, and ethical decision-making, preparing them to stay relevant and thrive in an increasingly complex environment.

“The Chartered Insurance Investment Manager designation was designed through close collaboration with InsuranceAUM.com and shaped by the expertise of practitioners who manage insurer investment portfolios every day,” said Adam R. Carmichael, CPCU, president of The Institutes Knowledge Group. “By grounding the program in real-world insurance investment challenges, CIIM equips professionals with practical, insurance-specific knowledge they can apply immediately helping them navigate complexity, make informed decisions, and deliver meaningful value within their organizations.”

The Chartered Insurance Investment Manager™ designation consists of three specialized courses and an ethics requirement and can be completed in approximately six to nine months. Upon successful completion of the course exams and ethics requirements, participants earn a mailed diploma and digital badge recognizing their achievement and expertise.
